Mammography
Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to create images of the breast tissue. It is a well-established screening and diagnostic tool used to evaluate breast tissue for the presence of cancer.
We follow the American College of Radiology recommendations with regards to screening mammography. In women with average risk of breast cancer annual mammography starting at age 40 is recommended. In women with high risk for developing breast cancer, screening is usually started earlier than age 40 and supplemental screening with other modalities might be indicated. Please feel free to contact us for further advice.
The main aim of a screening mammogram is to detect cancer in its early stages, improving patient prognosis.
We complement mammography with breast ultrasound, which is used to increase the overall sensitivity of the investigation or to further characterize a lesion.
We also perform breast tomosynthesis at our George and Knysna practices. It is an advancement in mammography by taking multiple low dose x-ray images at different angles that allows thin 1mm slice evaluation and 3D reconstructions of images. It improves cancer detection, reduces false positive findings and the need to perform additional mammographic views.
All mammograms are performed by qualified, experienced, female mammographers.
You may wait for your formal report, however a written report will be sent to your referring doctor.
We perform core or vacuum assisted (VAB) biopsies when indicated under ultrasound or stereotactic (mammogram) guidance. We also assist in marking lesions for surgical excision.
