Who We Are

Our team of dedicated radiologists, radiographers, supportive and administrative personnel, strive to provide a comprehensive, state of the art, diagnostic and interventional radiology service to the residents of and visitors to the Garden Route, Klein Karoo and surrounding areas.

Meet the Team

Dr. W Spies

MBChB(UFS) | M.MED.RAD.D(UFS)

Dr Werner Spies did his undergraduate medical training at the University of the Free State. He did his specialist training at the University of the Free State and obtained his MMed degree in 2002. He stayed on as consultant radiologist at Universitas Hospital and gained additional experience in interventional radiology during this time. He joined Garden Route Radiology in 2003.

Special interests: Interventional Radiology (nerve blocks and lumbar sympathetic nerve ablation), musculoskeletal and neuroimaging.

Dr. H R van den Berg

BSC(Pret) | MBChB(Pret) | M.MED.RAD.D(UFS) | FC.RAD(SA)

Dr Ryno van den Berg did his undergraduate medical training at the University of Pretoria and obtained his MBChB degree in 2008. He did his specialist radiology training at the University of the Free State, obtaining both the MMed and FC.Rad (SA) degrees and qualified as Radiologist in 2016, thereafter joining Garden Route Radiology.

Special interests: Musculoskeletal, Neuroradiology and Oncology imaging.

Dr. J Pieterse

MBChB(Pret) | M.MED.RAD.D(UFS) | FC.RAD(SA)

Dr Jaco Pieterse did his undergraduate training at the University of Pretoria and obtained his MBChB degree in 2004. He worked in anaesthetics for a few years and obtained his diploma, DA(SA). He did his specialist radiology training at the University of the Free State, obtaining both MMed and FC.Rad (SA) degrees in 2017, thereafter joining Garden Route Radiology.

Special interest: Oncology Imaging (Prostate MRI).

Dr. E Gerber

MBChB(Pret) | M.MED.RAD.D(UCT) | FC.RAD(SA)

Dr Erhardt Gerber did his undergraduate medical training at the University of Pretoria and obtained his MBChB degree in 2004. He did his specialist radiology training at the University of Cape Town, obtaining both the MMed and FC.Rad (SA) degrees in 2018, thereafter joining Garden Route Radiology.

Special interests: Interventional radiology and musculoskeletal imaging.

Dr. N van der Merwe

MBChB(UFS) | M.MED.RAD.D(WITS) | FC.RAD(SA)

Dr Neels van der Merwe did his undergraduate medical training at the University of the Free State and obtained his MBChB degree in 2004. He then practiced as general practitioner for a few years in South Africa and Canada. He did his specialist radiology training at the University of Witwatersrand, obtaining both the MMed and FC.Rad (SA) degrees in 2019, thereafter joining Garden Route Radiology.

Special interests: Interventional radiology, chest-, neuro- and peadiatric imaging.

Dr Org Strauss

MBChB,M.Sports.Med(UFS) | FC Rad Diag(SA) MMed Rad (UP) | Diploma in Procedural Sedation(UWC)

Dr Strauss did his undergraduate medical training at the University of the Free State and obtained his MBChB degree in 2003. He also obtained his Masters Degree in Sports Medicine from the University of the Free State in 2012 and worked as a Sports Physician for 10 years as the Team Doctor of the Cheetahs and the Bulls respectively, before obtaining his specialist degree, MMed Radiology and FCRad Diagnostic(SA) from the University of Pretoria in 2021. After a short stint in private practice in Pretoria he joined Garden Route Radiology in 2022.

Dr. Reinhardt Dreyer

MBChB (SMU) | M.MED.RAD.D (WITS) | FC.RAD (SA)

Dr Reinhardt Dreyer did his undergraduate medical training at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University formerly known as the Medical University of South Africa in 2015, He completed his internship training in Pietermaritzburg and did his community service in Sabie. He then completed his specialist training at the University of the Witwatersrand, obtaining both the MMED and FC.rad (SA) degrees in 2023, thereafter joining Garden Route Radiology.

Dr. Jandus de Villiers

MBChB (Pret) | M.MED.RAD.D (UFS) | FC.RAD (SA) | EDiR

Dr. Jandus De Villiers completed his medical training at the University of Pretoria, earning his MBChB degree in 2014. He gained valuable experience working in emergency and trauma units before specializing in radiology at the University of the Free State. In 2023, he obtained both the MMed and FC.Rad Diag (SA) degrees and further enhanced his credentials by earning the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR). Dr. De Villiers is now part of the esteemed team at Garden Route Radiology, where he continues to apply his expertise in diagnostic imaging.
